Solid tumors are particularly difficult to kill. They create an environment around them that favors growth yet shelters them from a variety of treatments. These "cold" tumors are resistant to the patient's immune system.
Current research is investigating ways to crack through this barricade, making the tumor "hot", to allow for more effective treatments.
